Chapter Fifteen: Beefing up security

Alexis

When I got home after my unintentional visits to Azmodeus’s motel, I called the old man to give him an update on what happened. It shouldn’t have surprised me that he already knew. He’d been listening to the police scanner at the time and even called an old friend on the force, offering an explanation that had all the blame fall on Anvil, the idiot who threw the bomb.

After a fitful night of sleep, I got ready and began my ride toward the clubhouse. Even with how minor the damages from the bomb turned out to be, Azmodeus had been right. The Russian would retaliate in some way, so we needed to be ready.

If I were honest with myself, I wasn’t half as worried about the Russian retaliation as I was about spending the day helping Azmodeus in whatever surveillance operation he had planned. Spending all day alone with him in a surveillance van might have been more dangerous than whatever the Russian had planned for us.

I didn’t exactly trust myself around Azmodeus. Half of my tossing and turning last night had been because I remembered the feel of his arms around me as we rode out of the forest. The objections the rest of my mind offered to these ever more distracting thoughts, seemed to come quieter and quieter. A day alone with him, and I would barely be able to hear them.

The worry gnawed at my stomach, more and more, the closer I got to the clubhouse. Before I even pulled into the parking lot, I saw two additional vehicles parked there. The first, a white van identical to the one Song drove the other day, except for the logo on the side. Instead of electricians, this van claimed to be from a catering company.

Next to the new van, sat another, the same make and model, though black. When I passed it and parked my bike in front of the clubhouse, next to Azmodeus’s ride, I saw him standing with a group of men I didn’t recognize talking on the far side of the black van. He waved me over after I parked.

Since I’d had a conversation with Azmodeus last night, where he said he was bringing a mercenary crew in, it didn’t take a genius to recognize the four men he stood with as that mercenary team. All four of them dressed in pants with multiple pockets and rugged boots. I noticed conspicuous bulges under three of their jackets, telling me they were armed. The fourth, a wiry Asian man, wasn’t wearing a jacket. A foot-long curved knife hung from his belt like a sword.

“Lex, I was just conferring with the team about security upgrades for the clubhouse,” Azmodeus said before he turned to the four men. “This is Wraith, Lucifer, Batsa, and Churchill.”

As he introduced the men, he pointed down the line. Wraith’s short cropped dark hair grayed at the temples. His tanned and weathered face showed his advancing age, but he looked to be in phenomenal shape for a man I had to think was pushing fifty, if not a little older.
